York was an important city for the Romans, Saxons, Vikings and Normans. Later it was, for a time, the capital of England and it is still the capital of the North.  Surrounded by its medieval walls, the centre of the city is dominated by the awe-inspiring 13th century York Minister, the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe.

Today, York is a vibrant university city, packed with restaurants, cafes, English pubs, bars and shops. For entertainment, there are theatres and cinemas, nightclubs and live music. York is full of interesting specialist shops, from arts and crafts to famous high street fashion stores.

For the more active, York offers golf and tennis, horse-riding and rowing, swimming pools and sports centres.
