Cork is to be found in the south of Ireland and is the country's second city, with a population of 190,000.  It has all the benefits of a larger city, but its layout means that its many attractions can all be visited on foot.  It is a lovely city to wander around, with its unique atmosphere created by its 19th century narrow lanes and markets.  Built on an island between the two main channels of the River Lee, it is a city of hills as steps, quays and bridges, Georgian houses, spires and pedestrian walkways.

Cork and its region have a rich archaeological, cultural and literary heritage, reflected in the city's selection in 2005 as European Capital of Culture.  More recently, the city was named as one of the top 10 cities to visit in the Lonely Planet guide's Best in Travel 2010, in which it was described as "sophisticated, vibrant and diverse, while retaining its friendliness, relaxed charm and quick-fire wit - a fantastic destination with great restaurants, galleries, bars and shops as well as stunning scenery on its doorstep."

It is generally recognised as the gourmet capital of Ireland, with award-winning restaurants and a tradition of fine cuisine characterised by artisan food specialities using the freshest of produce.
