- have an upper-intermediate/advanced level of English so that they can contribute with ease to activities and discussions.
Please note: The course is not intended for native speakers of English or for teacher trainees.
Course Aim
This is a refresher course which aims to illustrate current practice in ELT and develop participants' confidence in using English for teaching and other purposes. It is suitable for practising classroom teachers who want to confirm and extend their knowledge of ELT developments and techniques, and improve their fluency.
Content
There are two main components: language learning and language teaching.
The language learning component provides practice in selected areas of the English language and takes place in the afternoons. Language activities, in which participants take part as ‘learners' in the mornings also provide the opportunity for some language development.
The language teaching component consists largely of interactive discussions related to the language activities, materials evaluation and workshops.
Topics include:
- the four skills
- grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation in the classroom
- dealing with mixed-level classes
- drama and song in ELT
- other relevant topics.
Approach
The emphasis is on active participation, learning through activity and collaborative groupwork. The course is not lecture-based but consists of language tasks which teachers participate in as ‘learners' before reflecting on and discussing their underlying principles.
